Foreign University International School Manila Philippines - Basic First Aid and Fire Fighting Workshop
Last Saturday, 6 September 2014, the 1st year students of SOHM had a Basic First Aid and Fire Fighting workshop as term activity for the unit Safe, Secure and Hygienic Environments in the Hospitality Industry.

Conducted by Cesar Alexander Guevara, a registered nurse and certified first aid provider, the goal of the workshop was to give students hands on experience on how to perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), how to dress wounds and how to use a fire extinguisher.

Students were introduced to Resusci Ann, the model doll used for practicing CPR and using the AED. Students Elysa Artates and Laurenz Santos were able to go through the 2 minute process of applying mouth to mouth resuscitation and CPR then apply the AED. After the process, both Elysa and Laurenz said that it was a tiresome and stressful but at least they had knowledge on what to do in case the need arises.

After the basic first aid session, students were then given a live demonstration on how to use a fire extinguisher to control a fire. Students were reminded on PASS (Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the lever, Spray from left to right).

At the end of the workshop, students received a Certificate of Attendance. More than the certificate, the students developed some confidence on Basic First Aid procedures. We hope and pray that we don’t have emergencies that will test and our knowledge and skills, but having this workshop makes the students better prepared should anything happen.
